World Health Organization (WHO)

The World Health Organization (WHO) is the specialized United Nations agency responsible for international public health. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, it connects 194 member states to coordinate responses to health emergencies, expand universal healthcare, and promote global well-being. Established on April 7, 1948 (a date now celebrated annually as World Health Day), the WHO acts as the global authority on health policies, research, and data.

Core Mandate & Goals

The WHO is driven by a primary mission to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable. Its primary areas of focus include:

• Health Emergencies: Directing and coordinating the world's response to disease outbreaks and public health crises.
• Universal Health Coverage: Helping countries ensure all people have access to quality health services without financial hardship.
• Health Promotion: Addressing noncommunicable and communicable diseases, alongside environmental, economic, and social health determinants.
• Norms and Standards: Setting global guidelines on everything from essential medicines and diagnostic tests to digital health frameworks.

Organizational Structure

The WHO's global operations are managed through three distinct governance and operational pillars:

The World Health Assembly (WHA)

The supreme decision-making body comprising delegates from all member states. It meets annually to determine organization-wide policies and approve budgets.

The Executive Board

Composed of 34 health experts elected for three-year terms. This body is responsible for implementing the Assembly's decisions and managing the Secretariat.

The Secretariat

The operational arm of the organization consisting of the Geneva headquarters, over 150 field offices worldwide, and six regional offices covering:
