United Nations Economic Commission For Africa (ECA)

Established in 1958 by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) is one of the UN's five regional commissions. Headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the ECA comprises 54 member states and works to promote economic and social development, foster intra-regional integration, and support international cooperation across the African continent.

Core Mandate & Guiding Frameworks

• Dual Role: Operates as both the regional arm of the United Nations in Africa and an integral part of the continent's regional institutional landscape.
• Strategic Alignment: Aligns its programs and initiatives with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union's Agenda 2063.
• Primary Objective: Driving sustainable economic growth, policy innovation, and regional cooperation across member states.

Led by an Executive Secretary (Claver Gatete), the ECA coordinates continental priorities through its Addis Ababa headquarters and five dedicated subregional offices:

• North Africa: Tangier, Morocco
• Southern Africa: Lusaka, Zambia
• West Africa: Niamey, Niger
