About UN Women

UN Women is the designated United Nations entity dedicated to advancing gender equality, women's rights, and the empowerment of all women and girls globally. Serving as the secretariat for the UN Commission on the Status of Women, UN Women works with governments, civil society, women's movements, and the private sector to eliminate gender disparities and reform laws, institutions, and social norms.

Key Operational Focus Areas

  • Leadership & Governance: Expanding women’s participation and representation in political and economic decision-making.
  • Economic Empowerment: Promoting equal access to decent work, eliminating occupational segregation, and narrowing the gender wage gap.
  • Freedom from Violence: Preventing and responding to gender-based violence and discrimination globally.
  • Peace, Security & Humanitarian Action: Placing women's rights at the center of peace building, conflict resolution, and crisis response.

Core Roles & Functions

| Function | Operational Scope | | --- | --- | | Normative Support | Supports intergovernmental bodies (such as the Commission on the Status of Women) in formulating global standards, policies, and norms. | | Operational Assistance | Helps Member States implement gender standards by providing tailored technical and financial support upon request. | | System-Wide Coordination | Leads and coordinates the UN system's work on gender equality, monitoring progress to ensure accountability across agencies. |

Historical Background & Foundation

In July 2010, the UN General Assembly created UN Women as part of the UN reform agenda to address structural challenges, inadequate funding, and fragmented leadership in global gender initiatives.

The entity consolidated four previously distinct parts of the UN system into a single driver:

  • Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW)
  • International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW)
  • Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI)
  • United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
