Nexus Ethiopia (formally the Nexus of National Humanitarian Actors in Ethiopia) is a national non-governmental organization committed to delivering integrated, people-centered programming across Ethiopia. Operating under the "Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) Nexus" framework, the organization addresses protracted crises and structural vulnerabilities by strengthening local systems, advancing aid localization, and bridging the gap between immediate emergency relief, sustainable livelihoods, and peacebuilding.
Theory of Change & Strategic Rationale
- Contextual Analysis: Recurring and protracted crises create overlapping, compounding vulnerabilities and heightened operational uncertainty, particularly for youth, women, and historically marginalized groups.
- The HDP Nexus Approach: Traditional siloed responses are replaced by an integrated, multi-sector approach that connects emergency relief directly to long-term development and social cohesion.
- System Strengthening & Localization: Emphasizes reinforcing and sustaining local and national systems, institutions, and community-led solutions rather than substituting them with external interventions.
Vision & Mission
- Vision: To see the resilience capacity of vulnerable populations increased by integrating the HDP Nexus pillars across its programmes to attain sustainable development in Ethiopia.
- Mission: To enhance the resilience capacities of vulnerable populations to shocks and deliver integrated and holistic HDP Nexus (Humanitarian-Development-Peace) programmes to attain inclusive, sustainable development.
Core Programmatic Pillars
- Humanitarian Response: Rapid, dignified emergency assistance delivering vital relief, protection, water and sanitation (WASH), food assistance, and emergency education during acute disasters and displacement.
- Sustainable Development: Multi-year initiatives aimed at poverty reduction, climate-smart agriculture, livelihood diversification, and building community-level capacity to withstand recurring environmental and economic shocks.
- Peacebuilding & Social Cohesion: Integrating conflict-sensitive programming, social cohesion initiatives, and local reconciliation mechanisms across all field interventions, particularly in conflict-affected and transition zones.
Governance & Leadership
- Governance Oversight: Governed by an independent Board of Directors providing strategic direction, institutional policy guidance, and fiduciary stewardship.
- Executive Leadership: Led by Executive Director Fiseha Mezgebu, a seasoned humanitarian professional and advocate for the localization of humanitarian aid with prior leadership experience across national NGOs and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA).
- Operational Management: Run by an interdisciplinary executive team overseeing program implementation, monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning (MEAL), and administrative operations.
