The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a global humanitarian network of 80 million people that helps those facing disaster, conflict and health and social problems. It consists of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the 192 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), one of the 192 national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world, was founded on July 8th, 1935, by government edict, following the second Italian invasion of Ethiopia. ERCS began by providing humanitarian services to wounded soldiers and civilian victims. That same year on 25th September 1935, ERCS was officially recognized as the 48th member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

ERCS is auxiliary to the government and yet it is an independent humanitarian organization. It was established and recognized by law through a National Charter adopted in 31th October 1947. The Charter has undergone various parliamentary revisions, the last being in 1999. The current Charter was endorsed by the Parliament in January 2018.

Dr. Thomas A. Lambie (1885 – 14 April 1954) was the first Secretary General of Ethiopia Red Cross Society from July 8/1935- May 5/1936. He was a missionary medical doctor noteworthy for becoming an Ethiopian citizen, being responsible for several early medical efforts in Ethiopia (including the founding of two hospitals). He also worked as a medical doctor in Sudan, Nigeria, and Palestine, where he died.

Currently, the Society has a structure consisting of 14 regional offices, 34 zonal branches and 132 district (Woreda) branches, as well as more than 5,800 Kebele Red Cross Committees at the grass root-level. The Society has 6.1 million members, and there are currently over 258,000 volunteers registered throughout the nation, of whom 47,000 are actively engaged in various humanitarian initiatives.

From 2011 to 2016, we started as a grant-making organisation, with projects chosen on the basis of the personal inclinations and passions of our founders. Early partnerships through grant-making helped us learn how to ‘do development’ through cooperation with grantees, who shared an in-depth knowledge of their field with us.

We partnered with Amref East Africa, Action Aid, African Education Trust, Somaliland Nursing and Midwifery Association, Windle Trust International, Medical Aid Films, Action Aid, and VSO, amongst many. Part of our current expertise relates back to the knowledge built through these early partnerships. In education, African Education Trust and Windle Trust partnerships were of particular significance. With African Education Trust, besides funding the education of girls in Somaliland, Puntland and Somalia, we were the first to lead and organise the automation of data on leaving certificate results at a national level in South Sudan. With Windle Trust International, we placed 50 African refugees over four rounds at UK universities with full scholarships for postgraduate study. In health, our partnership with Medical Aid Films also stands out. They made short films on key medical operations and procedures, which local doctors and midwives could download on their smartphones and which were dubbed in the local language, thereby providing state-of-the-art medical training to health practitioners without access.

The establishment of a strong Social Accountability Committee (SAC) is one of the innovative approaches of JeCCDO. Establishment of this committee highly contributed to improve basic social services delivery. The SAC at Bishoftu and Bahir Dar towns is playing a significant role in organizing interface meetings between the service providers and service users. As a result, service providers is improving provisions of social services in their localities. Different organizations have been sharing experiences from the SACs, especially SACs located in Bishoftu town.

Engaging in social enterprise is the second innovative approach of JCCDO. It has initiated the Training Center in Bishoftu that generates sustainable income from renting training facilities and other services, and accommodations. The income from this enterprise is allocated for different social development interventions including responses to Internally Displaced People. This innovative approach is also contributing to ensure the institutional and economic sustainability of the organization.

The third innovative approach is the grain bank business being implemented under partners CBOs. The model initiates CBOs to buy different cereals during the harvest time and store it for seasons of scarcity. Therefore, to whoever facing shortage of supply, CBOs sale it with reasonable prices to their members and reduces food shortage burdens thereby helping community members to lead more stable life.
