Position Summary
The Deforestation-Free Supply Chain Expert will provide technical leadership and market systems expertise to design, implement, and scale supply chains that are sustainable, traceable, and compliant with international standards. This role is central to ensuring HARNESS delivers deforestation-free value chains that meet global market requirements while supporting Ethiopia’s sustainable forest and landscape management.
By aligning producers, enterprises, and markets, the position will help establish a scalable model for sustainable trade and climate-resilient livelihoods. The role requires deep knowledge of agricultural and forest-based value chains, experience with traceability and certification systems, and strong engagement with private sector actors and market regulators. The position holder will ensure that Ethiopia’s forest and agricultural commodities can access global markets while contributing to sustainable landscape management.
Key Responsibilities
Supply Chain & Traceability
- Develop and operationalize deforestation-free supply chains for key commodities.
- Lead implementation of traceability systems and certification processes.
Market Linkages & Finance
- Strengthen market linkages between producers, processors, and buyers.
- Identify and scale financing mechanisms that support sustainable sourcing.
- Promote inclusive business models integrating smallholders, women, and youth.
Policy & Knowledge Management
- Support government institutions in aligning trade and agricultural policies with global deforestation-free requirements.
- Document lessons and contribute to global knowledge on sustainable supply chains.
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Supply Chain Management, Forestry, Environmental Policy, or a related field.
- 8–10 years of relevant experience in supply chain development, sustainable sourcing, or market systems strengthening.
- Proven expertise in traceability systems, certification standards, and compliance with international regulations.
- Strong experience engaging with private sector actors, cooperatives, and producer organizations.
- Experience in Ethiopia or similar contexts is highly desirable.
Technical Competencies
- Strong understanding of deforestation-free value chains and market requirements.
- Knowledge of certification systems and traceability technologies.
- Ability to integrate supply chain development with landscape management goals.
