Job Description


Duration: One year, subject to renewal based on performance and availability of funding Reports to: Project Site Coordinator

Background

Stichting Wageningen Research (SWR) Ethiopia is an international NGO registered in Ethiopia since March 2021 with the FDRE Agency for Civil Society Organizations. The organization is established with the objectives of promoting a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable food systems in Ethiopia. One of the projects implemented by SWR Ethiopia is Transform Soil Fertility Management in Ethiopia (TRANSFORM).

TRANSFORM is a consortium program led by IFDC with key consortium partners (Stichting Wageningen Research/SWR/, Wageningen Environmental Research/WENR/, World Soil Information/ISRIC/, SOS Sahel Ethiopia, Environment and Coffee Forest Forum/ECFF/), and preferred collaborating partners (MoA, EIAR and RARIS the Well In Action, TWA). The program implementation will last from January 2025 to December 2028.

As part of its intervention in three districts of Amhara, South Wollo Regional State, Stichting Wageningen Research Ethiopia is seeking an experienced vehicle driver to apply for the position mentioned hereunder.

Position Summary

The driver will work under the direct supervision of the Project Site Coordinator with close support from the Project Manager and SWR Ethiopia Logistics Officer. The driver shall be responsible for providing transport and logistical services to the TRANSFORM team for the project implementation purpose. The driver is also responsible for the safety and security of the passengers and the care and safety of the vehicle assigned to him/her.

Key Responsibilities

Vehicle Operation

  • Drive and maintain the vehicle in a professional, conscious and safe manner obeying the local road traffic laws.
  • Ensure that at all times the vehicle is equipped with the correct tools and spare parts (functioning jack, a spade, an approved tool kit, a spare wheel with a properly inflated tyre and first aid kit).
  • Ensure that he/she has a valid driving license at all times and ensures that a copy of the car paper and log sheet is in the car.
  • Ensure that vehicles are checked daily and weekly, and that they are correctly maintained.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is kept clean, inside and outside, at all times.
  • Ensure that no unauthorized personnel, no military personnel, no harmful weapon including gun, stick, knife, spear, any explosive materials, chat, or drugs are on board.
  • Distribute different letters and packages to and from project office and to other partners and stakeholders.
  • Assist office in coordinating field visits.
  • Ensure to leave the compound with authorized paper and passenger, clearance or store issue for goods for clearly stated reason.
  • Maintain a logbook of vehicle movement, its mileage, servicing, fuel consumption and general vehicle condition.
  • Ensure parking of vehicles in a safe area when on field visit, not near the market, fuel stations, bars or any unsecured places.
  • Perform other duties as required related to vehicle management.

Others

  • Assist the project team in providing the necessary logistical support such as dispatching letters, procurement of supplies and stationery, and any other facilitation support at time of meetings, workshops, etc.
  • Perform any other similar tasks that may be reasonably assigned by the supervisor.

Reporting

  • Report all accidents, or other incidents involving other vehicles or pedestrians, to the SWR Ethiopia Administration and the team leader.
  • Ensure that the proper procedures for insurance claims are followed at the time and scene of any accident.
  • Report any vehicle damage or malfunction to the Logistics Officer as soon as possible.
  • At the end of the month, submit completed log sheet to the Logistics Officer.

Job Requirements

  • Completion of secondary education, 3rd grade clean and valid driving license, minimum of 5 years of previous related work experience.
  • Basic oral and written English communication skills.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and team skills and proven ability to be flexible in demanding situations.
  • Ability in minor vehicle maintenance especially at time of unexpected cases during field travels.

Other Information

Travel: Able to travel frequently to the project partners and project sites in the area covered by the region. Travel may include visits to the field under challenging circumstances and less secured areas.

The position of the driver requires a full-time commitment of the successful candidate. No additional professional engagements will be allowed.
