About the Organization

MELA FOR HER is a social enterprise in Ethiopia that aims to transform women’s and girls’ lives across Ethiopia by providing access to affordable and eco-friendly menstrual products, menstrual health education, and job opportunities.

We envision a world in which every girl and woman has access to sustainable menstrual products, understands the nature of sexual and reproductive rights, and is therefore empowered to control her life and destiny.

MELA FOR HER is looking for a detail-oriented and experienced accounting professional to take the position of Finance Officer. You will join a team of professionals united by commitment to a cause and shared values. Your main goal will be to manage MELA FOR HER’s financial resources and transactions, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations.

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Finance Manager of MELA FOR HER, the position holder is expected to be responsible for the following roles:

Key Responsibilities

  • General accounting tasks, including reconciling and maintaining balance sheet accounts and general ledger operations, preparing and maintaining accurate financial records, ledgers, and journals, preparing monthly closing and financial reports, and preparing account/bank reconciliations.
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, including invoicing, payments, and collections.
  • Ensure all expenses are within the assigned project budget and verify the completeness of all required supporting documentation for all payments.
  • Prepare payments and bank transfers and facilitate bank transactions.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements, reports, and budgets.
  • Conduct financial analysis and forecasting to support decision-making processes.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulations, and internal policies.
  • Identify and resolve invoicing issues, accounting discrepancies, and other financial-related issues.
  • Assist with internal and external audits, including the preparation of audit schedules and responses to audit inquiries.
  • Monitor cash flow and liquidity, identifying and addressing any discrepancies or issues.
  • Prepare monthly payroll and ensure timely salary payment.
  • Ensure all government taxes are paid on time.
  • Make sure that all stock transactions are reflected in the system.
  • Plan and manage Quarterly inventory count. Report any variances on the spot.
  • Prepare actual inventory costing monthly.
  • Prepare a cost of goods sold (COGS) report every month.
  • Collaborate with other departments to provide financial guidance and support.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and best practices in finance and accounting; and
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Finance Manager.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in finance or accounting, preferably within a business organization, manufacturing company, or social enterprise.
  • Strong knowledge of financial management principles, accounting standards, financial reporting requirements, cost accounting, and applicable financial regulations.
  • Excellent understanding of the Ethiopian tax system, including relevant tax laws, statutory compliance, and reporting requirements. Prior experience in the manufacturing sector is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial planning, budgeting, cash flow management, reconciliations, and the preparation of financial statements.
  • Experience in managing grants and donor-funded projects, including financial reporting and compliance with donor requirements, is considered an added advantage.
  • Proficiency in accounting and financial management software, with advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear financial reports and effectively communicate financial information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • High standards of professional ethics, integrity, confidentiality, and accountability in managing financial resources.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
