About SHAMIDA Ethiopia:

Position Overview:

We are seeking a compassionate, qualified, and committed Social Worker to support women, children, and families accessing maternal and child health services at Kidus Petros Hospital in Addis Ababa. The Social Worker will be responsible for conducting comprehensive needs assessments and facilitating access to essential services, including healthcare, medications, and social and economic empowerment programs.

Key Responsibilities:

Psychosocial Support

  • Observe patient behavior and assess psychosocial needs and appropriate intervention strategies.
  • Conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments, including physical health, mental well-being, family dynamics, financial status, and social support systems.
  • Interview patients and families to evaluate their situations, risks, and care needs.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor patient-centered social work care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Provide short-term counseling and emotional support to patients and families coping with illness, trauma, crisis, disability, or hospitalization.
  • Support vulnerable populations, including elderly patients, persons with disabilities, uninsured individuals, and victims of abuse or neglect.
  • Respond promptly to crisis situations such as abuse, neglect, domestic violence, suicidal ideation, sudden loss, or severe psychosocial distress.

Care Coordination and Discharge Planning

  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, therapists, and case managers to ensure integrated, holistic patient care.
  • Coordinate safe and timely discharge plans, including referrals to home care, rehabilitation, skilled nursing, hospice, or community-based services.
  • Ensure continuity of care across hospital departments and external service providers.

Documentation, Compliance, and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation in patient medical records.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Track outcomes and report on social work interventions as required by hospital management and partners.

Team Collaboration and Capacity Building

  • Participate actively in interdisciplinary rounds, case conferences, and care planning meetings.
  • Communicate psychosocial concerns and recommendations clearly to the healthcare team.
  • Facilitate staff education and awareness on psychosocial issues, trauma-informed care, child protection, safeguarding, and cultural competence in collaboration with Shamida Ethiopia.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, sociology, social anthropology, psychology from a recognized university.
  • Master's degree in the above field is an added advantage.
  • Proven experience working with vulnerable populations, including children, elderly patients, persons with disabilities, and survivors of abuse or neglect.
  • A minimum of 4 - 5 years of work experience in the hospital sector, institution care, community support working with vulnerable population.

  • Strong communication skills in both written and spoken English.
  • Strong report writing skills both in English and Amharic.

Salary and Compensation

Based on the organization scale.
