Organizational Overview

Orbis prevents and treats blindness through hands-on training, public health education, improved access to quality eye care, and partnerships with local health care organizations. Orbis International-Ethiopia has been carrying out this mission in Ethiopia since 1998.


Job Summary

The Field Coordinator will coordinate the implementation of the END FUND funded TT (Trachomatous Trichiasis) backlog clearance in different woredas of Central Ethiopia. The role extends support to East Gurage Zone and other project areas as necessary, while also coordinating Trachoma SAFE strategy activities in the region.


Duties and Responsibilities

Project Coordination & Implementation

  • Coordinate delivery of high-volume and quality TT surgery to clear backlogs in targeted woredas.
  • Develop woreda-based TT surgery plans and coordinate with zonal and woreda health offices.
  • Mobilize skilled Integrated Eye Care Workers (IECW) for outreach and static surgery services.
  • Coordinate diligent case-finding activities to identify all TT cases in implementation areas.
  • Organize review meetings with health departments and relevant partners.

Technical Support & Capacity Building

  • Provide and assist in training for IECWs, Health Extension Workers (HEWs), and community volunteers.
  • Conduct supportive supervision and implement quality assurance interventions for surgeries.
  • Facilitate links between zones, woredas, health facilities, the community, and Orbis.

Planning, Monitoring & Reporting

  • Prepare annual, quarterly, and monthly plans and reports against project targets.
  • Develop transition planning documents to integrate TT services into the existing health system.
  • Prepare quarterly case studies and maintain baseline data and activity records.
  • Participate in mid-term and final evaluations.

Operations & Resource Management

  • Monitor the judicious utilization of resources and timely submission of financial reports by partners.
  • Handle petty cash for the coordination office and ensure timely settlement.
  • Follow up on the collection of "Model 19" for all dispatched supplies.
  • Ensure office utilities are paid and fleet maintenance is performed according to policy.
  • Comply with security protocols and ensure a safe work environment for all employees.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: MPH or B.Sc. degree in Public Health, Ophthalmic Officer, or related health fields.
  • Experience: At least 4 years of total experience, with at least 1 year in eye care program implementation.
  • Preferred: Experience in trachoma or preventive ophthalmology.
  • Language: Proficiency in the local language of the project area is an asset.

Skills & Abilities

  • Good command of written and spoken English.
  • Basic IT skills (Word, Excel).
  • Strong interpersonal communication and team leadership skills.
  • Ability to foster an open, trusting work environment and lead quality improvement (CQI) initiatives.
  • High level of accountability and respect for deadlines.
